Filipino American History Month by Elisa Nguyen, DNP, RN, CMSRN President, Philippine Nurses Association of Northern California -- Stanford Subchapter

Updated: Dec 4, 2024

October 2024

As the inaugural president of the Philippine Nurses Association Northern California (PNANC)—Stanford Subchapter, I am honored to connect with you during Filipino American Heritage Month. This year's theme, "Struggle, Resistance, Solidarity, and Resilience," as designated by the Filipino American National Historical Society, resonates deeply with our collective journey and will be the guiding light of our celebration.

In this month's commemoration, we take a moment to reflect on our history. We acknowledge the systemic oppression and discrimination faced by Filipino Americans, recognizing the struggles that have shaped our journey. Yet, in the face of adversity, our community has not only endured but also exemplified remarkable solidarity, coming together to advocate for justice and drive meaningful change. This resilience inspires me personally and professionally, serving as a powerful reminder that every challenge presents an opportunity for growth, meaningful connections, and strengthening our community.

I would like to express my gratitude to Dr. Dale Beatty, CNE, Senior VP of Patient Care Services, Stanford Health Care, PNANC-Stanford Subchapter's Executive Sponsor, and PNANC's honorary member, and to the pioneering officers and board members of the PNANC-Stanford Subchapter. With a robust membership of 239, in partnership with the PNANC chapter, we stand united in our commitment to lead with unwavering fortitude, honoring the legacy of Filipino American leaders who paved the way for us. I invite all of you to join us on October 24th for our first-ever Filipino American Heritage Month celebration at Stanford Health Care. This significant event, which will include the induction of our inaugural officers and board members, underscores the integral role each of you plays in our community. Your presence will make this event truly memorable.

As we reflect on our theme of resilience, I'm reminded of Carlos P. Romulo, a remarkable Filipino diplomat and the first Asian to serve as Secretary General of the United Nations. He once said, "It is the strength, the courage, the wit, and the creativity of the Filipino people that will carry us through." This powerful statement not only reflects our historical journey but also serves as a source of inspiration and motivation for our future endeavors.

As we embody this strength and creativity, we will empower one another to achieve our goals. Let us lead with heart and conviction, fostering belonging, equity, inclusion, and leadership within our community and beyond. Together, let us make a lasting impact and ensure our lights continue shining brightly.

Best Regards,
